ICT Classrooms in Ghana, Africa
ICT classrooms project is a collaboration between a team from Edinburgh University, Learning Planet - an NGO organization and Aleutia - a computers' manufacturing company. The classroom uses the standard module of a shipping container to create an affordable, easy to move and built design. As the classrooms will operate without an a/c unit, passive design strategies for passive cooling became essential.
The final design enlarges the footprint of the container by opening the front elevation and using it as a floor plate. The building becomes a hybrid structure that incorporates a bamboo frame to cover the front elevations, with the use of local materials and workmanship becoming very important for the classroom set-up. The design investigates the option of a 40 feet container and a 2x20 feet. The project will go on site in January 2014.
