APPLETON TOWER REFURBISHMENT

Appleton Tower Major Building Refurbishment for Energy Efficiency was a design module with MA Advance Sustainable Design 2012-13.

The refurbishment aims the reduction of operational energy with the use of a sun space for passive heating and cross & stack ventilation strategies for passive cooling. A study revealed that the sun space in the south elevation is an ideal design strategy as it enjoys natural light and solar heat gains both during winter and summer months without overshadowing from surrounding buildings.

The key sustainable design features are:

  • use of locally sourced materials

  • use of products with no-chemical based treatments

  • to enhance natural lighting

  • automated louvers for all windows for glare and wind loads control

  • design of a green roof

  • advance building’s thermal mass qualities
